A three-part series facilitated by Rabbi Brusso on Jewish peoplehood. In-person at Bet Torah. A second opportunity for those who couldn't make it in February.

What does it mean to be part of the Jewish people?

Kanye West, Kyrie Irving and Dave Chapelle recently presented antisemitic depictions of Jews, who we are and how we tend to behave as a collective. What is clear is how dehumanizing, cruel and based on historical precedent, dangerous these lies can be. What is more complicated to think through is how we ourselves, as Jews, understand the idea of “peoplehood.” How is it that the same idea that gives us collective pride can also be used to depict Jews as in cahoots for nefarious purposes? In what ways do we feel kinship, connection and responsibility for other Jews in our community and around the world? Is this kinship based on values, identities or something else? When is peoplehood meaningful and positive and when is it complicated? How does the idea of peoplehood relate to antisemitic depictions of the Jewish people? When does peoplehood cause us to internalize hatred and when does it provide the confidence to live lives independent of other people’s projections?
